Mazu Worship Cultural Traditions (2022)
In a speech contest in Taiwan, I won first place after speaking about my experience joining a local temple night procession, where community deities are carried dancing in decorated carriages through small town alleys amid the sound of firecrackers and drums. Across Taiwan and the broader Chinese maritime diaspora, Mazu worship historically emerged in coastal port communities as a form of spiritual protection for sailors, and these traditions have remained strong across generations, sustained by a continued sense of connection to ritual and maritime life.
Green Jade: May the Wind be Always at Your Back (2022)
Standing atop the towering crane of the Green Jade (環海翡翠輪)—Taiwan's first domestically built large revolving crane vessel—the author surveys Kaohsiung Port, a gateway with roots in the 19th-century harbour once known as Takao. The piece traces Taiwan's drive toward offshore wind energy, backed by a government target of 20% renewable power by 2025 and a Taiwan Strait ranked among the world's premier offshore wind sites.

While at the China Maritime Museum in Shanghai, I gave a presentation about the story of the steam schooner J. B. Stetson, my interest in maritime history, and my hope that there may be more collaboration between maritime historians in the United States and China in the future.

A Solution to ‘Defuel’ Sunken Ships (2017)
The mysterious oil-related seabird deaths at Point Reyes and San Mateo revealed the devastating environmental threat posed by leaking shipwrecks, underscoring the urgent need for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to lead a large-scale effort to remove oil from high-risk wrecks before future marine disasters occur.
